Diving and the law in the Canary Islands

Scuba Diving is an extremely safe sport. Not only do PADI training programs give divers the tools they need to scuba dive and enjoy the sport safely, but also there are several laws in place locally and regionally which add additional safety requirements to dive shops operating here.

At Top Diving we are proud to offer a 100% legally operating diving operation, right down to who drives our boat. By law in Spain, all diving boats must be captained by a certified Patron Portuario (a boat Captained licensed to take tourists).

Meet Miguel and Domingo. Fully certified Patron Portuarios (Boat Captains) AND PADI Professionals.

Having two legal boat captains on staff ensures that we always have someone ready to safely take you to the best dive sites here in Gran Canaria.

Here are three questions you should always ask a diving centre in the Canary Islands before signing up or paying money:

  • Is my instructor qualified and certified by a diving organization, or are they still in training?
  • Is the dive boat registered and driven by a Patron Portuario?
  • Does this dive shops have all the licences to operate in the Canary Islands?
